Nuestros jabones artesanales - Our homemade soaps

Después de ver el interés de algunas amigas por estos jabones artesanales que hicimos el año pasado, nos animamos a hacer más. Ha pasado tiempo y tenemos curiosidad de ver si podemos mejorarlos. Conseguir el color no es fácil. Quedaron bonitos, o por lo menos eso nos pareció para ser la primera vez, pero destiñeron mucho al tener gran cantidad de colorante. Veremos que nos depara este nuevo intento, ¿habremos aprendido la lección?.

We want to make handmade soaps again. It´s been a while since we made them so we are curious to see if we can improve. It is not easy to get the right color. They came out kind of pretty but they stain, too much dye!. We will see what happens this time. Have we learned our lesson??

Hoy haremos de dos tipos. El primero, utilizando aceite de oliva  y el segundo lo haremos con aceite de freir usado (buena forma de reciclar!!!). El primer jabón se puede utilizar en el cuerpo y el reciclado se utiliza para quitar manchas, lavar ropa, lavavajillas etc. Es el jabón de la Abuela que hacían, y todavía acen en los pueblos, las abuelas.  

Today we will make two types- The first one, using olive oil and the second one using used cooking oil (it´s a good way to recycle it)). The first soap can be used to clean the body and the second one is used to remove stains, to wash laundry and dishes. It is the soap that grandmothers to make in the past (actually, still made in towns) called Grandmother´s Soap..

El primer jabón llevará:
The first soap has:

Aceite de oliva - Olive oil   1,500 gr.
Aceite de coco - Coconut oil   237.6 gr.
Aceite de almendra - Almond oil  50.1 gr.
Agua - Water  539.4 gr.
Sosa caústica - Caustic soda 209.8 gr.
Frangancia de musk y madreselva - Musk and honeysuckle fragance  29.5 gr.

Preparamos el escenario...
The stage is set....

comenzamos poniendo al baño maría el aceite de coco para que se derrita.

we start by melting the coconut oil

Mientras, pesamos la sosa caústica con mucho cuidado usando guantes,
Meanwhile, we carefuly weight the caustic soda using gloves,

y la disolvemos en el agua, echando la sosa sobre al agua y no al revés para que no salte.  Esta parte del proceso es mejor hacerla al aire libre para no inhalar los vapores dañinos. Dejar que se enfrie antes de añadirlo al aceite.
which will be dissolved in water, pouring the soda in water and not the other way around. It´s better to do this outside. Cool the mixture.

Pesamos los tres aceites,
We weight the oils,

los juntamos en una cacerola a la que añadiremos la mezcla de sosa y agua.
we pour the oils in a pan and then add the soda mixture.

Batimos con batidora (antes se hacía a mano pero se tarda mucho más) para que la sosa y el aceite se mezclen y ocurra el milagro!!.
The miracle occurs after stirring with a blender (it used to be done with a spoon, it takes much longer though) until the mixture reaches a point called "trace"

El truco para que el jabón salga bien es llegar a una textura "perfecta" que se llama traza. Si se espesa demasiado no podremos hacer bien la parte de colores, formas, etc. Con estos jabones "limpios" se llega muy rápido a la traza y hay que tener mucho cuidado porque al final, cuando se añade la fragancia, se espesa en segundos.
The trace has the texture of a thin pudding. If it gets thicker it´s then difficult to work with the colors and forms. It´s quick and easy to reach the trace so you have to be really careful. The fragance thickens the mixture even more.

En esta ocasión esperamos mucho a añadir la fragancia y se nos espesó rápido. Separamos el jabón en tres partes para añadir dos colores, morado y verde, además del beige original. Los colores no quedaron como queríamos y entonces entramos en pánico, caos y locura. Y en unos pocos minutos y corriendo porque se nos solidificaba todo logramos hacer algo así:
In this occasion, we added the fragance too late so the mixture thickened to much and too quickly. We divided it into three parts in order to add the colors: purple, green and the original beige. The colors did not came out as expected, the soap was getting thick quickly, so we panicked and started acting crazy, and in a few minutes this is what we produced:

Queríamos hacer algo artístico sin todavía tener la base de como manejar colores y fragancia. Necesitamos más práctica y experiencia y es lo que haremos. Aún así los jabones sirven, veremos dentro de un mes cuanto destiñen. Siempre se pueden utilizar como decoración en un baño!!!.
We wanted to create something beautiful and artistic without knowing how to properly use colors and fragances. We need more practice and experience and that is what we intend to achieve. The soaps will come out all right but if they dye, well.... maybe we´ll just use them for decoration!!!!

A última hora hicimos el jabón de aceite reciclado y en este caso sí logramos lo que queríamos. Sencillamente mezclamos:
At the end of the day we made the soap with used cooking oil:

Aceite usado - Used cooking oil  2,500 gr.
Agua - Water  860.3 gr.
Sosa - Caustic soda 334 gr.

Después de batir y cuando ya teníamos la traza casi lista le añadimos 3 cucharadas de Ariel en polvo.
At the end we added 3 spoons of Ariel powder.

Parece un bizcocho, dan ganas hasta de comérselo!!
Looks like a cake, wish I could eat it!

Hay que esperar de 24 a 48 para cortar los jabones en pedazos y se dejan curar durante unas 4 semanas. Veremos dentro de un mes cómo han salido!!!
You have to let the soap dry for two days before cutting it into pieces. The you let the pieces curate for 4 weeks before using them. We will see how this adventure turns out!!!
