Kenneth Faried es un jugador de baloncesto de la NBA. Nunca había oído hablar antes de él. Por lo visto juega en los Denver Nuggets. Por curiosidad lo busqué en Youtube y encontré una canasta que él metió en un partido con una asistencia preciosa de Rudy Fernández.

Kanneth Faried is a basketball player. Never heard of him before. We do not get much news from NBA players in Spain. He plays with the Denver Nuggets. I found a video of  him scoring with a wonderful assistance from Rudy Fernández.

Hasta aquí todo normal. Un jugador más de la élite del baloncesto. Pero el otro día me encuentro en las noticias un video en el que él presenta a sus dos madres. Cuenta su historia, su proceso de aceptación de esa realidad y termina diciendo que nadie le puede decir a él que no puede tener dos madres porque él las tiene. Lo hace de una forma tan espontánea, clara, natural, vulnerable, tan valiente en resumen. El comparte su historia, su verdad. La saca a la luz para apoyar las uniones civiles homosexuales.

But today, I was surprised by a video featuring him and his two mothers. In this video he speaks out about the relationship between him and his two mothers. He tells his story, how he came to accept this situation. And ends up saying that no one can tell him that he can't have two mothers because he really does. He speaks candidly, openly, vulnerable, boldly, courageously. He is sharing his story, his truth. And he does that to support gay civil unions.

Leo luego comentarios que dicen que tener dos madres trae problemas en el desarrollo de un niño. Que no son una familia. Y veo a este muchacho, que tendrá sus problemas como todo el mundo, y me doy cuenta que no hay nada más que decir, que explicar, que convencer. Se ve en el video el amor que hay entre estas personas, cómo forman una unidad familiar que ha crecido junta para afrontar las vicisitudes de la vida. Y te das cuenta que la familia no necesariamente es padre y madre porque ya sin hablar de la homosexualidad hay personas que han crecido solo con su madre, o solo con su padre, o con una tía y una abuela, o con dos tías. Y eso tambien es una familia. Con amor y con problemas como todo el mundo, como en cualquier familia, sea heterosexual, homosexual, monoparental, triparental. (Os acordais de esa serie en la que un padre educaba a sus hijas con la ayuda de dos amigos, ellos eran una familia!! y la peli "Tres hombres y un bebé?? tambien eran una familia).

I read comments that affirm that being raised by two mothers can have a negative impact on the child's development. That they are not a family. I watch again this video, see this guy, and realize that it speaks for itself. There is no need to explain further, to convince nobody. You can see the love between these people, how they are a family, despite what people may think or say. A family that has grown together to face life with its ups and downs. A family can't always be a mother and a father. Sometimes is just the mother, or just the father, or an aunt and a grandmother, or an uncle. And they are a family as well. With love and problems like everybody else. Like in any family, heterosuexual, homosexual, single-paren, with three parents. (Do you rembember that sitcom in which a father raised his three little girls with the help of his two friends??? they were a family, three guys and three girls!! and what about "Three men and  a baby? they were a family too).

La vida no es perfecta. Ninguna familia es perfecta. Todos tenemos problemas que vienen de la infancia. Y aún así, lo hacemos lo mejor posible.
Life is not perfect. No family is perfect- We all have problems rooted in our childhood. Even so, we do our best.

Nieve y atascos - Snow and traffic jams

Este fin de semana mitad de la población madrileña se lanzó a conquistar la sierra norte. La montaña, llena de nieve, esperaba pacientemente la llegada de la muchedumbre de esquiadores, turistas, niños con trineos y domingueros como nosotros.

This past weekend half of the population of Madrid left the city to conquer its northern mountain range. Full of snow the mountains were patietly waiting for the crowds of skiers, tourists, kids with sleds.

Queriamos solamente cruzar la montaña pero no fue tarea fácil.
We just wanted to cross the mountains but it turned out not to be an easy task.

La nevada me ha inspirado para crear la mesa de estación del invierno. Cada estación voy cambiando esa mesa en la entrada de mi casa. En ella coloco hadas de lana hechas por mi amiga Pilar y elementos estacionales del bosque. El paseo de ayer me surtió de todo lo necesario para hacerla. Así quedó:

I was inspired  by the other day snowfall to make the winter season table. I change it every season. I usually place on the table wool fairies made by my friend Pilar along with seasonal elements of the forest. Yesterday's walk stocked me with everything I needed to prepare it. This is how it looks:

Esos paseos sirven tambien para recoger leña y asi mantener el fuego del hogar siempre encendido. Entonces siento mi conexión con los ciclos naturales que me mantienen en el aquí y el ahora.

During those walks I usually gather firwood to keep the fire at home always on. I feel then my connection to the cycles of mother nature. It helps me stay in the here and now.

Vuelvo mi mirada hacia la mesa de estación y me asombro de la delicadeza de mis hadas del invierno.
I turn my gaze to the winter fairies that keep me company. I am amazed by their delicacy.

Definitivamente estamos en pleno invierno.

El día anterior a mi cumpleaños nevó. Un regalo de cumpleaños estupendo en el momento perfecto. El "viejo" huerto quedó así.

The day before my birthday it snowed. Wonderful birthday present. Great timing. The "old "vegetable garden after the snow storm.

Sin importarle la tormenta de nieve mi amigo el carbonero no se perdió la comida.

Despues de la nieve vino el viento. Todavía queda invierno y tormentas, y viento y espero que nieve, pero aún así tengo que empezar a pensar sobre el nuevo huerto. Necesito arar la tierra ya que sigue estando muy dura. Pienso volver al método de Gaspar Caballero. Lo primero será alquilar una motoazada al comienzo del mes de Febrero. Mientras tanto aprovecho la salvia del jardín para hacer un oleato de salvia y con ello preparar un jabón más natural, sin colorantes ni fragancias.

After the snow came the wind. The winter is still here and there will come storms, wind, and hopefully more snow. Still, I have to start thinking about the new vegetable garden. The soil needs plowing. It´s too hard. I am planning to go back to Gaspar Caballero´s method. The first thing will be to rent a rotary hoe at the beginning of next month. Meanwhile I use sage from my garden to prepare an oleate to make natural soaps. With no dyes or fragances.

De Lincoln a Obama - From Lincoln to Obama

Ayer pude ver la ceremonia de inauguracion de la nueva presidencia de Obama en directo por la TV. El evento me tenía hipnotizada. Solo una semana antes había visto la última película de Spielberg, "Lincoln". Y recuerdo perfectamente como congresistas hablaban de lo que significaba dar la libertad a 4 millones de negros (13ra.  enmienda de la constitución americana). La mayoría estaban preocupados, asustados, de lo que vendría después..... ¿¿permitir el voto a la gente de color?? ¿permitir el voto a las mujeres??? Nunca se hubieran podido imaginar que llegaría un día en el habría un presidente americano negro. Y ahora podía ver a Obama frente al capitolio acompañado de su esposa, una mujer negra admirada por todo el mundo.

Yesterday, I was able to watch Obama´s inauguration ceremony live. I was mesmerized by the event. Just last week I watched Spielberg´s new movie "Lincoln". I distinctly remember when congressmen, in the movie, were talking about giving freedom to 4 million black people (13th. constitution amendment). Most of them were worried, scared, about what would come next ..... allowing black people to vote????..... allowing women to vote????? They could have never thought or imagine that one day there was going to be a democrat black president. And here I could see Obama in front of the capitol accompanied by his wife, a black woman who is widely admired.

Y realmente era diversa. El artículo señala que eran principalmente latinos, homosexuales, mujeres y sobre todo afroamericanos. Son los que ha hecho esto posible, un presidente americano negro. Pero también ví a mucha gente blanca mezclada en la multitud. Compartiendo estos momentos históricos junto al resto. Gente joven, y no tan joven, que no ven esta situación como una amenaza, sino como una oportunidad.

And indeed it was diverse. The article says that they were mostly latinos, gay people, women and especially African American. They are the ones who made this possible, the first american black president. But I also watched white people mingling with this crowd. Sharing this historic moment together. Young people, and others not so young, who does not see this situation as a threat, but as an opportunity.

La gente y los políticos a los que todavía les atemoriza lo que es distinto a ellos, que demonizan a los negros, a los inmigrantes, a los homosexuales, son los mismos que en la época de Lincoln tenían miedo de dar la libertad a tanto esclavo. Estaban asustados de abrir la puerta a otra gente, a gente diferente. Pero a pesar del miedo la puerta no se puede mantener eternamente cerrada. Eventualmente, el deseo de igualdad y libertad de muchas personas la abrirán.

People and politics that are scared of anything different to them, that demonize black people, inmigrants, homosexuals, are the same as those ones that during Lincoln times were scared of  abolisinhg slavery. They were scared of opening the door to other people, different people. But despite the fear the door cannot be kept closed. Eventually it will be opened by the desire for freedom and equality of many people.

¿Qué será lo próximo?? ¿Una mujer presidente?? ojalá. Y si al final fuera mujer, negra y lesbiana, ya significaría la superación de muchos prejuicios a la vez!!

What is next?? A woman presindent?? hope so!!! And if at the end that woman is black and a lesbian, that would mean overcoming a few prejudicies at the same time!

Cómo hacer un comedero para pájaros - How to make a bird table

Me encanta la ornitología. Cuando iba a la universidad, hace mucho tiempo, salía al campo con mis amigas buscando bichos. Los que mejor se podían ver eran los pájaros. Como últimamente estoy muy casera he construido un comedero para pájaros para que vengan a comer y así poder verlos tranquilamente mientras trabajo. Tardaron 2 semanas en venir a comer, pero al fin llegaron....

I love birdwatching. When I was in college, long time ago, my friends and I used to go to the countryside looking for animals. The easiest to find were birds. Lately I have been feeling like being at home so I made a bird table to feed the birds and watch them while working. It took them two weeks to feel confident enough to come and use it. It was worth the wait:

Lo primero, las medidas de las distintas piezas (en cm.). Esta es mi interpretación:

 A continuación, cortar la madera contrachapada (1 cm. de espesor) en las distintas partes.

Pegar y atornillar el tejado, glue and screw the roof

Se pegan unos listones en la base para que los pájaros puedan posarse, dejando espacio en las esquinas para poder limpiar el comedero.
Wood strips are glued to the base leaving a space in the corners for cleaning.

Me está gustando mucho el hacer este comedero yo misma. Es muy gratificante aunque el resultado final no sea perfecto!!!
Loving the feeling of doing things myself. It´s very rewarding even if the final result is not perfect!!!

Bien por Jodie Foster, aunque suene extraño que una persona tenga que declarar algo así en público. Entiendo su necesidad de defender su privacidad pero a la vez me encanta escuchar a alguien famoso reconocer una parte de su vida que ha estado medio escondida o no aceptada abiertamente por la sociedad en general.

Good for Jodie Foster, although it sounds weird that someone has to declare something like this in public. I understand her need to defend her privacy and still I feel it is refreshing to hear someone famous acknowledge a part of her life that has been kind of hiden or not openly accepted by society in general.

Mi experiencia personal ha sido la de vivir con mi ex novia pero sin reconocerlo verbalmente porque eso podía dañar su vida profesional, o ese era su miedo. Es como vivir en una especie de si pero no, alguna gente lo sabe, otros prefieren no saber, no se dice abiertamente y así vivimos en esa nube. Así que entiendo perfectamente eso de poder decir abiertamente esto es lo que hay, reconocerlo y ya está. Y lo que la gente hace con eso es su asunto.

My experience has been to openly live with my ex-girlfriend and at the same time not verbally acknowledging it because that could hurt her professional life. It´s like living in a twilight zone, some people know, others prefer not to know and in this blur we lived. So I understand the relief to finally bring it to the open, acknowledge it and that is it. What people do with that is their business.

Cada persona tiene un camino que recorrer de aceptación de si mismo y a medida que lo recorremos con confianza vamos perdiendo el miedo a mostrar al mundo quienes somos en realidad a todos los niveles.

Each one of us has to walk the road of self-accceptance. As we walk this road with confidence we lose the fear of showing the world who we really are at all levels.

Maravillosa película iraní - Wonderful iranian movie

Yesterday I watched the iranian movie, "The color of Paradise". You can watch it in youtube.

Me encantó. Es preciosa, con una gran fotografía, una historia conmovedora y unos personajes maravillosos. La primera cosa que sorprende es la belleza del campo iraní. Estamos tan acostumbrados a relacionar Irán con dureza, guerra y fanatismo religioso y está película te da otra perspectiva. No sólo el paisaje sino los personajes tambien. Al observar sus luchas, sus discapacidades, amor, felicidad, tristeza, inseguridades puedes ver las tuyas propias, y por lo tanto sentirte cercana a ellos. La historia es dura de ver, pero si permaneces, si tienes la valentía de verla con un corazón abierto te lo suaviza. Por lo menos eso es lo que me pasó a mí. Anoche sentí como las aristas de mi corazón, la parte más dura, se ablandaba un poco. Pude llorar y sentir distintas emociones, me pude identificar con el niño ciego, con su padre, con su abuela. Todos estos personajes están dentro de mí, representan distintas partes mias y por eso la película es tan conmovedora. Vedla!!!

I loved it. It is beautiful, great photography, moving story, wonderful characters. The first thing that surprises you is the beauty of the iranian countryside. It gives you another perspecitve of this country which we often associate with hardness, war and religious fanatism. Not only the country side, but the characters as well. Watching their struggles, disabilities, love, happiness, sadness, insecurities you can relate to your own, therefore bringing them closer to you. The story is hard to watch but if you stay, if you have the courage to watch with an open heart it softens it. At least that is what happened to me. Last night I felt how the edgy part of my heart was softned a little bit. I could cry and feel different emotions, I could relate to the blind boy, to the father, to the grandmother. I have them all inside of me, they represent different parts of me and I think that is why the film is so touching. Watch it!!!

3 jabones y un brocoli - 3 soaps and a brocoli

Hoy recojo mi primer brocoli. Qué maravilla de color!!! A ver cómo preparo esta delicia.

Ayer corté los jabones antes de que se pongan muy duros. Y la verdad es que los del aceite usado quedaron muy bien. Buen jabón tipo lagarto, o no??
Yesterday, I cut the soaps before they got too hard. The cooking oil soap came out pretty good.

Con los de aceite de oliva se complicó la cuestión del color. No estaba bien mezclado así que por ejemplo el verde se separó en un extraño amarillo con puntos azules. En los tipo cup cakes casos no quedaron tan mal,

We had color problems with the olive oil soaps. The colors were not properly mixed. For example, green became a weird yellow with blue dots. Still, the cup cakes did come out more or less ok,

en otros, mejor ni mostrar las fotos!!.

En un mes estarán ya curados, es decir, la sosa caústica ya no hará daño a la piel y podrán ser usados.
In a month they will be cured, that is, the caustic soda won´t harm the skin and they will be ready to be used.

Nuestros jabones artesanales - Our homemade soaps

Después de ver el interés de algunas amigas por estos jabones artesanales que hicimos el año pasado, nos animamos a hacer más. Ha pasado tiempo y tenemos curiosidad de ver si podemos mejorarlos. Conseguir el color no es fácil. Quedaron bonitos, o por lo menos eso nos pareció para ser la primera vez, pero destiñeron mucho al tener gran cantidad de colorante. Veremos que nos depara este nuevo intento, ¿habremos aprendido la lección?.

We want to make handmade soaps again. It´s been a while since we made them so we are curious to see if we can improve. It is not easy to get the right color. They came out kind of pretty but they stain, too much dye!. We will see what happens this time. Have we learned our lesson??

Huerta de invierno - Winter vegetable garden

A pesar del frío, la huerta sigue dando frutos. El cuidado es prácticamente cero y aún así podemos recoger ahora mismo lechuga, acelgas y espinacas. Ha influido que hemos tenido un otoño húmedo y además el purín de ortiga que añadimos el pasado octubre ha surtido efecto.

Despite the cold weather the vegetable garden still bears fruit. Maintenance is almost zero, and still we can pick

lettuce, chard and spinach right now. This is thanks to a pretty humid autumm that we had and the nettle concoction sprayed last october.
