Aflojando la tierra del huerto - Loosening the soil of the vegetable garden

The other day the soil of the vegetable garden was finally loosened with a rotary hoe.

The soil in thhis part of the garden was the most difficult to loosen becasue it has never been cultivated before.

Así quedó la tierra. Lista para marcar los bancales.

The loosened soil ready.

The irrigation system order has arrived from Andorra and I have found stakes and thin bricks to mark the plots. Each stake is 1,5m high so I had to cut them in 4 pieces.

Next step, as soon as it stops raining, is to make the "Parades" and to add sheep manure and topsoil to enrich the soil, mix it and remove stones and weeds.

Buscando corujas con abuelo de 98 años - Looking for edible plants with a 98 year old granddad

Yesterday, Don Aguedo took us to serach for edible plants, "corujas". He is a 98 year old garnddad from Zarzalejo. This "corujas" are small edible plants that grow in streams during winter. You can eat them with your salad as they are similar to watercress. People in town are reluctant to tell strangers about the secret places where these plants can be found. But Mari´s conection to Aguedo and Paula allows us get to one of this secret places. So Aguedo takes us downhill and uphill looking for "corujas".

At three o'clock he was ready to go!!

he climbed a pretty steep climb

so steep that I'm sure younger people wouldn't feel like climbing it

and this 98 old grandpa, up he walked, at his own pace of course

After the collection we returned to Zarzalejo guided by the spirit of this grandad, who is in nature as if  at home. With his eyes wide open, attentive, careful with every step and at the same time finding the abundance that was surrounding us: the watercress and corujas to eat,  pinecones and dry broom for the stove.

Planificando mi huerta - Planning my vegetable garden

The time has come to start planning my new vegetable garden. After last year's "failure" with my experimental garden I decided this year to go back to a method that works. At least it worked for us two years ago. It is called "Parades en Crestall", designed by Gaspar Caballero de Segovia. I got his book and I am going to apply it to the last word. The rest of my garden is chaotic and wild, but this part is going to be methodical and tamed. Yeahhhh!

This is the area. The same as last year but extended towards the front of the plot.

The idea is to make 4 "Parades" , 4 terraces, in order to allow a rotation cycle of four years with these four plots or parades. Each one will measure 3 x 1.5 m and have plants of a particular botanical family. Between the terraces there will be a corridor of 50-60 cm wide.

The other important aspect of this method is the irrigation, a sweating pipe system that I have already ordered at Poritex. With this system we will use less water and can obtain a more constant and uniform humidity.

Next week a gardener will come to loosen the earth with a rotary hoe. So yesterday we had to collect the vegetables that I still had in that area of the garden. Despite last years' failure we were able to pick carrots, lettuce, onion, brocoli and chard.

In the meantime, just found "Mumford & sons", da??? and loved them and their music.... especially the sound of the banjo!! it reminds me of country life!! simple, quiet, even if waiting for someone....

Tomorrow will continue with the preparation of the parades. I need to get stakes and thin terracota construction units.

Gracias,
Thanks,

Dios no comete errores - God does not make mistakes

It seems that this is the moment of videos, movies and tv series for me. I keep finding interesting stuff. This one is sweet. The dog being so patient and amorous. The kid so clear about not wanting to be touched. Still, there they are, one in front of the other sharing that moment. So beautiful, so perfect in its imperfection.

This reminds me of the little girl inside of me, that I hate so much sometimes. That I consider so imperfect. When I watch this I can feel the love towards me and towards everybody. I can see that we are not perfect, and still we deserve our own loove and the love of others. And above all, the love of a compassionate God that did not make a mistake when it created us, they way we are..

I do not know japanese cinema. I don't even know much about japanese culture. Still, I was captivated by "Wind ninja boy Fujimaru", TV series I used to watch while living in Venezuela, centuries ago!!. So when "la Mari" told me about this japanese samurai film, I thought, why not? I could even like it. The title "Love and honor".

"LOVE AND HONOR"

The main character is a samurai, therefore it would be easy to imagine a film full of battles and adventures. Instead, it is a domestic movie. And that is why I believe it is interesting, special. It allows you to get to know better the everyday life of an unknown, at least for me, culture. It has thousands of little details about their life, about the intimacy of the household, the couple and the seervant. Natural noises becomes important, you will unaderstand why when you watch the movie. At certain moments the films lokks like a spaghetti western, japanese style. It is when the samurai leaves the house to face a question of honor. But what surprised me most was the expression of feelings. The main characters hacve to go through an ordeal, a strong emotional process of acceptance, overcoming, that is well expressed through their faces. It is a film about love, honor and it is definitely worthwhile watching and enjoying.
